Trauma Explorations and Applications
Description
Students will explore trauma-related issues for a specific population of their choice,
apply brief intervention techniques, identify measurable outcome parameters,
complete research and write a publishable paper.
This course combines experiential and distance-learning components. In addition to reading, writing and research assignments, students will be required to attend a 3-day course, taught by the instructor, at a location of their choice. Registration for the workshop requires an additional fee beyond the EMU tuition for the course. Students must register for the workshop separately with the instructor through www.TraumaFirstAide.com
Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:
- Identify their personal stress/trauma patterns
- Differentiate between mental health and mind-body perspectives of trauma
- Identify two or more differences between somatic and cognitive approaches to
trauma therapy
- Define how ‘explicit’ and ‘implicit’ memory is affected by trauma
- Identify the divisions and basic function of the brain as they relate to trauma
- Identify the normal human responses to trauma including: cognitive,
emotional, behavioral, physiological, spiritual and relational aspects
- Incorporate TFA skills as a means of self care and self regulation
- Gain the capacity to work directly with acute traumatic symptoms using
TFA
- Identify 6 or more physiological traumatic responses of the Peripheral
Nervous System
- Apply TFA skills in a specific population, affected by trauma
- Discuss the implications of trauma in our society and on our healthcare
system
- Develop an interdisciplinary perspective for working with trauma
- Conduct research on trauma related issues, for specific populations
- Identify measurable physiological and other parameters for trauma research
